Unlocking Clarity With Walking: How Nervous System Regulation Beats Mindset Work

Feb 23
3 min read

Nervous System Regulation is the magic ingredient which precedes clarity, in my experience.

And this is why it's homework for my clients. Keep reading - I will share a 10-minute powerful walking exercise to balance your body and mind.

When you feel stuck, overwhelmed, or caught in a loop of self-doubt, the common advice is to deal with your thoughts and your mindset. But what if your body is sending signals that your mind can’t simply override?

The truth is, clarity does not come from gritting your teeth and trying to override your biology. It comes from a nervous system that feels safe and regulated. When your nervous system is out of balance, your body floods with stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline. This state pushes you into survival mode, where you react instead of respond, catastrophize instead of assess, and spiral instead of decide.

This is not a good time to make decisions!

Nervous system regulation is the foundation of clear thinking and walking is the pièce de résistance when it comes to a quick solution to help you calm your body and unlock your clarity.

So How Do You Quickly Regulate Your Nervous System With Walking?

Walk for 10 Minutes (You can change your state in this little amount of time.)

Walking, especially outdoors and barefoot if possible, is a powerful way to calm your nervous system. Here’s why:

  • Walking is bilateral movement, which means it engages both sides of your brain. This helps balance brain activity and reduces stress.

  • Being in nature lowers physiological arousal by exposing you to natural light, fresh air, and calming sights.

  • Walking interrupts the “stress trance,” the repetitive mental loop that keeps your body stuck in threat mode.

Try this: Lift your eyes and widen your gaze as you walk. Notice the colors, shapes, and sounds around you. This intentional awareness helps your brain shift focus from internal worries to external calm.

Ten minutes is often enough to change your state. You are not avoiding your problems; you are preparing your body to face them with clarity.

Breathe with Longer Exhales

Breathing is one of the fastest ways to influence your nervous system. When you breathe out longer than you breathe in, you activate the parasympathetic nervous system, which promotes rest and repair.

Try this breathing pattern:

  • Inhale slowly through your nose for a count of four.

  • Exhale gently through your mouth for a count of six or eight.

As you breathe, bring your attention to how your body feels. Notice any tension and imagine it softening with each exhale. This simple practice stimulates the vagus nerve, which helps slow your heart rate and calm your mind.

Even a few minutes of this breathing can reduce stress hormones and bring you back to a grounded state.

Engage Your Senses to Ground Yourself

When your nervous system is overwhelmed, grounding yourself through your senses can bring you back to the present moment and safety.

Try this sensory exercise:

  • Find five things you can see around you.

  • Notice four things you can touch or feel.

  • Listen for three sounds in your environment.

  • Identify two smells.

  • Recognize one taste or simply notice your breath.

This exercise shifts your brain’s focus from internal stress to external reality. It helps break the cycle of anxious or racing thoughts and brings your nervous system into balance.

Congratulations! Now you are ready make great decisions that fuel a great life.

This state allows you to access direction naturally instead of forcing it. You become more resilient, creative, and able to handle challenges without spiralling.

CONGRATULATIONS! YOU ARE MAKING DECISIONS FROM A PLACE OF POWER.
